Another option is no case at all. Some traveling cyclists use a cardboard bike box (your bike shop will be happy to give you one if you ask nicely), and still others will simply wrap their naked bikes in plastic. Anecdotally, baggage handlers are more careful with these bikes because they see it’s in fact a bike and not just a bunch of underwear. This may or may not be true. It’s also obviously a lot cheaper than using a case, which is good, since you’ll need the savings to offset all those exorbitant bike fees. Still, you’ve got to pack the bike carefully, and you’re always gambling on what the bike is going to look like when you meet it on the other side.

On top of all this, regardless of your packing method, you need to pay close attention to your itinerary and even the size of the aircraft. If one of the legs of the flight involves a small plane, there may not be room on it for your bike, in which case the airline may decide to send it along later—which can seriously screw up your carefully planned cycling vacation.
